05:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 2108 [Liberator] (rev 05)

CIM Bundler

Keywords=esxi
MegaRAID Storage Manager Support on the VMWare ESXi Operating System
MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) Installation instructions are available in video form.

VMware ESXi 4.x: Instructions not available, but very similar to VMware ESXi 3.5 instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IhG6W2MOWE (See also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reSevE2he40&feature=related)

Supporting MegaRAID Storage Manager on the VMware ESXi Operating System
This section describes the product requirements needed to support the VMware ESXi operating system.
The MegaRAID Storage Manager server part cannot be installed directly in VMware ESXi. Management is performed through the MegaRAID Storage Manager server (Framework) installed on a Linux/Windows machine in the same subnet.
Remote management of VMware ESXi is supported only in a Complete installation of the MegaRAID Storage Manager on the following operating systems:
— Microsoft Windows Server
— RHEL
— SuSE Linux
If you are unable to manage your ESXi host remotely, please refer toKB 16586.
Network Configuration:
Network communication is a key element for a proper communication between the ESXi CIM provider and the LSI management software. Please make sure that the network settings are correct by making the following changes:
Provide a proper hostname and IP address while doing the initial configurations for the ESXi host.
For networks that do not have DNS (or DHCP) configured, the “hosts” file in the machine on which the MegaRAID Storage Manager is installed must be edited as follows:
Add an entry to map the VMware host’s IP address with the host name. This is for the discovery process to happen correctly. In the absence of this entry, the VMware host would be discovered as 0.0.0.0.
Add an entry to map the actual IP address of the localhost with its hostname (an entry for the loopback address would be present by default in the hosts file and it shouldn’t be removed). This is to ensure that the Asynchronous Event Notifications (AENs) are delivered correctly.
For eg, if 135.24.228.136 is the IP your VMWare host and 135.24.228.137 is the IP of your Linux host, the following entries must be added in the hosts file:
135.24.228.136 dhcp-135-24-228-136.lsi.com dhcp-135-24-228-136 #VMWare
135.24.228.136 dhcp-135-24-228-136.lsi.com dhcp-135-24-228-136 #Linux
Discovery and login:
You can start the MegaRAID Storage Manager from a remote Windows/ Linux machine that has the MegaRAID Storage Manager installed in Complete mode.
On the Host View window that appears, click Configure Hosts button. The Configure Host window appears as shown below.
Figure 1 Configure Host
SelectDisplay all the systems in the network of local server.
Click Save Settings. A confirmation dialog appears asking you to confirm your settings. Click OK in the confirmation dialog to start the discovery process. The ESXi server appears in the list of found hosts as shown in the following figure.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In the “IPAddress” field of Host View screen (ref Fig 2), you should provide the IP of the local machine (can be the actual IP or loopback address) or the IP of any Windows/Linux machine that has MSM installed. You should not provide the VMWare ESXi host’s IP here.
Figure 2 Host ESXi Server Name
Double click your ESXi host. The following figure appears.
Figure 3 Login on the Host Server
Enter the root account name and password of the ESXi Host in the User Name and Password fields respectively.
Click Login.
After you log in, the dashboard view provides an overview of the system and covers the properties of the virtual drives and the physical drives, the total capacity, configured capacity, unconfigured capacity, background operations in progress, the MegaRAID Storage Manager features and their status (enabled or disabled), and the actions you can perform, such as creating a virtual drive and updating the firmware.
